Recovery Act Limited Competition for NIH Grants
Here’s some more “hot off the wire” information for those of you interested in applying for NIH grants using some of the Recovery Act monies. If you go to grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-OD-09-004.html, you will find the RFA document with details on the funding opportunities available now. It looks to me like the application due date is May 27, 2009, with the earliest anticipated start date of Sept. 30, 2009, so its time to get to work on your proposals!!
Good Luck !!!

Please read the SIIM News column on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 written to stimulate discussions on where we can participate in this ground-breaking Act and perhaps form multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional groups for working on the solutions as defined below.
PLEASE POST COMMENTS; we want to know what you think.
SIIM staff members posted all the relevant links in yesterday’s blog. If we are going to have Electronic Health Records for all of us by 2014, there will be a lot of work to do and SIIM members are certainly leaders in research and development leading to Integrated Healthcare Information. We need to both participate in the research and development and also to be heard when the lawmakers are deciding on policy.

As Dr. Honeyman-Buck wrote about on the SIIM website, President Obama’s newly-passed American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has implications for the Health Information Technology field.
One of the President’s campaign promises was to move the U.S. health care system to broad adoption of standards-based electronic health information systems, including electronic health records within five years. This may not be a reasonable time frame, but he pledged to invest a considerable amount toward reaching his goal, as shown in the ARRA 2009.
The main goal is the utilization of an electronic health record (EHR) for each person in the United States by 2014. This includes a mandate to develop methods to foster public understanding of health information technology and strategies to enhance the use of HIT in improving quality of health care, reducing medical errors, and reducing health disparities.
How will the ARRA affect your institution? With funds available for health care IT, how can you take advantage of these opportunities/obtain grant money? Please share your thoughts below.
