{"id":95,"date":"2011-01-25T08:36:00","date_gmt":"2011-01-25T08:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.springer.com\/ijph\/?p=95"},"modified":"2011-01-25T08:36:00","modified_gmt":"2011-01-25T08:36:00","slug":"health-of-ethnic-minorities-in-europe-and-not-only","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.springer.com\/ijph\/general-public-health\/health-of-ethnic-minorities-in-europe-and-not-only\/","title":{"rendered":"Health of ethnic minorities in Europe- and not only."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an ever changing world like ours, migration is a reality that every country has to face, one way or another. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iom.int\/jahia\/jsp\/index.jsp\">According to the International Organization for Migration <\/a>(IMO), the total number of international migrants has increased\u00a0<strong> <\/strong>over the last 10 years from about <strong>150 <\/strong>million in 2000 to <strong>214 <\/strong>million today, which means that <em>one every 33 persons <\/em>in the world today is, in fact, a migrant. Migration nowadays takes many different forms,\u00a0 something which poses different challenges for the healthcare system of each <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iom.int\/jahia\/Jahia\/about-migration\/developing-migration-policy\/migration-and-health\/cache\/offonce\/\">country <\/a>. The importance of issues in health and health care use amongst migrants and ethnic minorities has been recognised by different bodies, such as the European Public Health Association (EUPHA), which has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eupha.org\/site\/section_mh.php\">a section dedicated to migrant health<\/a> and the World Health Organisation (WHO) which organised a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/hac\/events\/3_5march2010\/en\/index.html\">Global Consultation on Migrant Health<\/a> in Madrid a few months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Following this increasing need for understanding and explaining the differences in health and use of health care among different ethnicities, The International Journal of Public Health recently published a\u00a0 special issue on<a href=\"http:\/\/www.springerlink.com\/content\/1661-8556\/55\/5\/\"> Health of ethnic minorities in Europe<\/a>. Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rug.nl\/staff\/s.a.reijneveld\/index\">Sijmen A. Reijneveld <\/a>wrote an Editorial for it, which is published with open access by Springer.
