New course from the SSPH+!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Did the title of this post leave you wondering? Was your initial reaction &#8220;how can GIS be connected to public health?&#8221;. Think again! The physical and social environment that surround us play an important role in our wellbeing and -therefore- the geographic concept of place cannot be ignored in public health! <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geographic_information_system\">GIS <\/a>provide a standard platform for exploring spatial attributes and relationships between our environment and health.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssphplus.ch\/spip.php?page=ssph_home&amp;lang=en\"> Swiss School of Public Health+<\/a> offers a course that will provide an introduction to GIS and its use in public health and epidemiological research. Prior GIS knowledge is not required and -by the end of the course- participants will be able to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Understand how GIS can be used to enhance public health and research<\/li>\n<li>Add, manipulate, visualise and map spatial data in ArcGIS1<\/li>\n<li>Perform basic spatial analyses in ArcGIS10<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The course will be held from <strong>18th to 21st November 2013<\/strong> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisstph.ch\/\">Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institut<\/a>e in Basel, Switzerland. The course facilitators will be Dr. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisstph.ch\/about-us\/staff\/detailview.html?tx_x4epersdb_pi1[showUid]=3463&amp;cHash=c631e4e458290a78b0e4ba2200367384\">Danielle Vienneau <\/a>from the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute and Dr. <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.imperial.ac.uk\/medicine\/people\/c.dehoogh\/\">Kees de Hoogh <\/a>from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.imperial.ac.uk\/medicine\/research\/researchthemes\/cancer\/research_cancer\/ebs\/\">Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics<\/a> at the Imperial College London.<\/p>\n<p>As there are limited places for this course, you are advised to register early and by October 18th 2013 using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispm-unibasel.ch\/ssphplus\/spip.php?page=phd_intranet_light&amp;lang=en&amp;id_course=144&amp;var_mode=recalcul\">this link <\/a>.
