{"id":371,"date":"2011-11-25T14:59:47","date_gmt":"2011-11-25T14:59:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.springer.com\/ijph\/?p=371"},"modified":"2011-11-25T14:59:47","modified_gmt":"2011-11-25T14:59:47","slug":"psa-testing-ijph-published-research-critical-appraisal-and-new-uspstf-recommendations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.springer.com\/ijph\/current-debate\/psa-testing-ijph-published-research-critical-appraisal-and-new-uspstf-recommendations\/","title":{"rendered":"PSA testing: IJPH published research, critical appraisal and new USPSTF recommendations."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A while ago, we <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.springer.com\/ijph\/hot-off-the-press\/new-article-on-prostate-specific-antigen-psa-testing-free-access\/\">informed <\/a>you about an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.springerlink.com\/content\/j18xt678357v8u56\/fulltext.html\">IJPH article<\/a> on Prostate Specific Antigen Testing (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/cancertopics\/factsheet\/detection\/PSA\">PSA<\/a>).In this article, the authors reported reduction in prostate cancer mortality in the population of Tyrol, where more than 3\/4 of the male population aged 45-74\u00a0 had at least one PSA test in the past decade.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after the publication of this paper, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org\/\">US Preventive Service Tasf Force <\/a>updated their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org\/uspstf12\/prostate\/prostateart.htm\">2008 recommendation This new update <\/a>conlcudes that &#8220;prostate-specific antigen\u2013based screening results in small or no  reduction in prostate cancer\u2013specific mortality and is associated with  harms related to subsequent evaluation and treatments, some of which may  be unnecessary&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In view of these new developments, we invite you to read our<a href=\"http:\/\/www.springerlink.com\/content\/b02k17865g1w22t7\/fulltext.html\"> newly published commentary<\/a> on the article on PSA testing mentioned above (available for free!).
