The Internatonal Journal of Public Health is very much focused on social inequalities in health! We recently published a special issue on the subject, <\/a>as well as a Supplement on social determinants of child and adolescent health<\/a>. We are, therefore, happy to see that there is a movement towards more research on socioeconomic inequalities in health, as well as efforts to tranlsate this research into practice; a fine example of that is the news of the launch of the UCL Institute of Health Equity<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The institute was launced today (21 November 2011) by the UK health secretary Andrew Lansley<\/a> and Professor Sir Michael Marmot<\/a> who will be the director of the Institute. According to the press release<\/a>, the institute\u00a0 “aims to reduce health inequalities through action on the social determinants”. It will be funded by the UK Department of Health<\/a>, UCL <\/a>and the British Medical Association.<\/a><\/p>\n
