What could go wrong apart from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/gallery\/2016\/jun\/22\/mud-at-glastonbury-festival-in-pictures\">a bit of mud<\/a>\u00a0(which some people claim is part of the charm anyway)? Actually,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/musicblog\/2014\/jul\/04\/have-you-ever-had-any-nightmare-festival-experiences-worst-glastonbury\">a few things can go wrong<\/a>\u00a0but contacting measles is not the first thing that comes to mind, is it? I was surprised to read that indeed there was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/health-news\/measles-music-festivals-outbreak-health-warning-symptoms-spread-a7178936.html\">government\u00a0warning<\/a> in the UK due to a measles outbreak spreading in music festivals. People were urged to get vaccinated and not attend festivals if they have symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>As much as we want to think of measles and similar diseases as things of the past, there have been more <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epidemiology_of_measles\">than a few outbreaks in recent years <\/a>in developed countries, including\u00a0one in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-31585047\">Berlin, Germany in 2014-2015<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdph.ca.gov\/HEALTHINFO\/DISCOND\/Pages\/Measles.aspx\">another one in Disneyland<\/a>, California in the United States . There goes the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.euro.who.int\/en\/health-topics\/communicable-diseases\/measles-and-rubella\/measles-and-rubella\">2010 WHO commitment to the elimination of measles<\/a> by 2015&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00038-016-0842-8\">A systematic review we just published<\/a>, looked at the epidemiology and economic burden of measles, mumps, pertussis \u00a0and varicella in Germany. The authors included 36 published studies, as well as surveillance data. Here are the main findings of this review:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Despite the existing recommendations for immunisation, there is still considerable morbidity due to childhood diseases in Germany<\/li>\n<li>Adults are also affected by these diseases<\/li>\n<li>There were regional differences in incidence of some of the diseases,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The authors call for improved vaccination and communication strategies, targeting all age and risk groups. Which, of course, makes sense and it is highly needed. But I cannot help wondering: will we ever achieve this? Call me a pessimist but it was back in the beginning of 2011 that<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.springer.com\/ijph\/current-debate\/hot-off-the-press-retracted-study-linking-autism-to-mmr-vaccination-now-declared-an-elaborate-fraud\/\"> I wrote this blog post<\/a> about the now retracted study that linked MMR vaccination to autism. I was wondering then whether this would mean that the anti-vaccination movement will lose its popularity <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/02\/02\/us\/a-discredited-vaccine-studys-continuing-impact-on-public-health.html?_r=0\">but it seems this is not the case<\/a>, especially for certain places\/communities.
